Quick answer: job stress and burnout are associated with lower heart rate variability, specifically reduced parasympathetic (vagal) activity. But HRV is noisy, hugely variable between individuals, and easily moved by alcohol, illness, heat and training. Read your own 2–4 week trend, never a single night, and never someone else's number.

What HRV actually measures

Your heart does not beat like a metronome. The gap between beats varies slightly, breath by breath, and the size of that variation is heart rate variability. It is not a measure of fitness or of how "strong" your heart is. It is a window onto the autonomic nervous system: the balance between the sympathetic branch (mobilise, spend) and the parasympathetic or vagal branch (recover, digest, repair).

Higher variability generally reflects more vagal influence — the brakes working. Under sustained load, the brakes get less say. That is why the number is interesting for stress at all.

The evidence on stress and burnout

A systematic review published in PLOS ONE examined sympathetic and parasympathetic activity in job stress and burnout, and found that both are associated with reduced heart rate variability, specifically lower parasympathetic activity. That is the honest, load-bearing statement, and it is worth reading carefully for what it does not say.

It does not say HRV diagnoses burnout. It does not give a threshold below which you are in trouble. It describes an association observed across groups of people. Applied to one person on one Tuesday, it supports exactly one conclusion: a falling multi-week HRV trend is consistent with rising physiological load, and deserves attention alongside everything else you know.

The four ways people misread HRV

1. Comparing to other people

HRV varies with age, sex, fitness, genetics, measurement method, device, and which part of the night is sampled. Two equally healthy people can differ threefold. Comparing your 42 to a friend's 110 tells you nothing about either of you. There is no meaningful universal "normal HRV" to hit.

2. Reading single nights

A glass of wine, a late meal, a hot bedroom, a hard training session, the first night of a cold, a long flight — each can move a night's HRV more than a month of chronic work stress will. One low night is noise. This is why any tool worth using smooths across days rather than alerting on a single reading.

3. Treating it as a score to maximise

HRV is an indicator, not a goal. Optimising the number directly — chasing it with supplements, gadgets and anxiety about the morning reading — reliably produces one outcome: more stress about HRV. If tracking is making you worse, stop tracking.

4. Expecting it alone to catch burnout

Burnout is defined by the WHO along three dimensions — exhaustion, mental distance from the job, reduced professional efficacy — and none of them is a cardiac measurement. HRV is one input among many. Sleep, hours, control at work and how you actually feel are not decoration around the physiology; they are most of the picture.

Resting heart rate: the quieter, steadier sibling

Resting heart rate is less fashionable and considerably less noisy. It moves for many of the same reasons and drifts more slowly, which makes a sustained rise of several beats over your own baseline a cleaner signal than a bumpy HRV chart. Watching both together beats watching either alone — a divergence usually points at something mundane, like a device or an illness.
